«Milan Flow» se desarrolló como una extensión de una serie de proyectos que exploran las cualidades experienciales y corporales del Canal Tẻ en Ciudad Ho Chi Minh (Virginia). Filmado en Milán, este documental muestra uno de los canales que aún se conservan en la ciudad. La esencia del film reside en las cualidades temporales y espaciales del canal y en cómo estas difieren de las del Canal Tẻ en Ciudad Ho Chi Minh. El Canal Tẻ es ancho y está sujeto a las mareas; el color del agua es marrón turbio y la superficie está dominada por jacintos de agua y desechos urbanos. En contraste, el canal de Milán es mucho más estrecho, pero se caracteriza por la sorprendente fuerza y claridad de su corriente.
«Milan Flow» se centra en la claridad del agua y en cómo el entorno urbano circundante se refleja en su superficie. Los reflejos en el Canal Tẻ son más tonales y carecen del nivel de detalle presente en el canal de Milán. Las perturbaciones en la superficie del agua son rápidas y sumamente cautivadoras. El retraso de un segundo, o el desfase de 30 fotogramas, resalta una ausencia de datos inherente a los procesos de grabación digital (y analógica).
‘Milan Flow’ was developed as an extension of a series of projects exploring the experiential and embodied qualities of the Tẻ Canal in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. Recorded in Milan, this film documents one of the city’s remaining canals. The essence of the film lies in the temporal and spatial qualities of the canal and how these differ from those of the Tẻ Canal in HCMC. The Tẻ Canal is wide and tidal; the colour of the water is a muddy brown, and the surface is dominated by water hyacinths and urban debris. In contrast, the Milan canal is much narrower, yet characterised by the surprising force and clarity of its flowing water.
‘Milan Flow’ focuses on the clarity of the water and the way the surrounding city environment is reflected on its surface. Reflections on the Tẻ Canal are more tonal and lack the level of detail present in the Milan canal. The disturbances on the surface of the water are rapid and highly engaging. To explore this, the film sequences were layered with one-second delays (equating to 30 frames), using ten layers. This process exaggerates and abstracts the shimmering effect of the fast-moving water. The film questions not only what is present, but also what is absent. The one-second delay, or 30- frame offset, highlights an absence of data that is inherent within digital (and analogue) recording processes.

Mi práctica cinematográfica explora los espacios urbanos, centrándome en la interacción dinámica entre los entornos construidos y naturales. Actualmente resido en Ciudad Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, y me siento particularmente atraído por los callejones de la ciudad, que conforman gran parte de su tejido urbano. Estos espacios revelan las intrincadas relaciones entre comunidad, familia, vida doméstica, trabajo y ocio. Mi trabajo actual se extiende al Canal Te, examinando cómo la infraestructura creada por el hombre se cruza con los ecosistemas naturales.
Creo películas que transforman encuentros personales en narrativas visuales, abstraiendo la imagen para desviar la atención de los objetos y centrarla en el flujo de relaciones entre espacios y eventos. La postproducción juega un papel vital, permitiéndome ir más allá del objetivo de la cámara y expresar lo que yace bajo la superficie. Mediante imágenes densamente superpuestas, empleo el color, el patrón y el movimiento para provocar el reconocimiento, con narrativas que se despliegan a través de largas secuencias de una sola toma. Esta técnica da voz a los propios entornos, en lugar de limitar la expresión al proceso cinematográfico. Utilizo imágenes en movimiento, fotografía fija y realidad aumentada como herramientas interconectadas para reimaginar la experiencia urbana.
My filmmaking practice explores urban spaces, focusing on the dynamic interplay between built and natural environments. Currently based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, I am particularly drawn to the city’s hems (alleyways), which form much of its urban fabric. These spaces reveal the intricate relationships between community, family, domesticity, work, and play. My current work extends to the Te Canal, examining how man-made infrastructure intersects with natural ecosystems.
I create films that transform personal encounters into visual narratives by abstracting the image to shift attention away from objects and focus on the flow of relations between spaces and events. Postproduction plays a vital role, allowing me to go beyond the camera’s lens and express what lies beneath the surface. Using densely layered images, I employ colour, pattern, and movement to trigger recognition, with narratives unfolding through long, single-shot sequences. This technique gives voice to the environments themselves, rather than limiting expression to the filmmaking process. I use moving images, still photography, and augmented reality as interconnected tools to reimagine urban experience.
